Devotion to God pretty much involves doing what pleases God, and sharing in his life. However, sometimes it is difficult to discern how to please God. There are so many writings, opinions, ways of life, etc in the world today that so much words become noise.

But, how does one discern the best way to please God? To know his word and be sure that we are on the right path. Well, the first way to God’s heart is:

Listening to him:

You cannot please God if you do not listen to him, and you cannot hear God if you do not listen to his Son, and you cannot hear his Son if you do not listen to the Church. The Church is the visible presence of God on earth, his kingdom and salvation subsists in the Church. The best way to get your path straight is by adhering to the teachings of the Church and listening to her counsel.

Holiness of life

This is obvious. You cannot please God if you do not struggle to live his life as well. The life of grace we receive at Baptism and strengthen in other sacraments, is the life of Christ in us. When we sin we lose or taint this life of God in us. And when we return to God in prayer and confession, he forgives and restores his Spirit in us. To please God, one must live the very life of Christ. Speak his word, walk in his steps, see through his eyes and listen with an attentive heart. One must forgive injuries and help heal a world broken by discord and selfishness.

Persistent Prayer

Prayer isn’t just what you do when you go to Mass, or say your Rosary or read from the Psalms. Prayer happens whenever you lift your heart to God. Whenever, you say the Lord’s name “Jesus” in your heart with love. Whenever you remember Christ waiting for you in the Blessed Sacrament; any time you go and see him, sitting before him albeit in silent awe and joy. Prayer is thinking of your neighbor’s good and running to assist them with a heart of humility and joy. God wants all of our lives to give him glory, so technically speaking, everything we do and seek to do to give God glory is prayer, since we are uniting our actions with the Sacrifice of Christ to the Father.

Teaching God’s word to others and exhorting them to follow Jesus. This can be perfectly done even without saying a word. God values silent preaching; the kind of Gospel that flows from our very lives to others. When we forgive injuries, give to those who hate us and assist them. God is preached. Of course we can also, when the occasion arises, verbally counsel others who are in need of it, or who have doubts or are confused. However, the preaching that God values more is living the Gospel ourselves and letting our own actions speak to others.

Summary: Faith, Hope and Love

What am i trying to say in a nutshell? We must believe in, hope in and love God with all our hearts, and love others too. We cannot please God if we do not have faith and hope and love.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. – Hebrews 11:6

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love, I gain nothing. – 1 Corinthians 13: 1-3

… in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time. – Titus 1:2

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13: 13
